if you could move anywhere... where would you go?

maui. that's what we always said when we would ask each other that question.

we went to maui in 2010, for our late honeymoon. we stayed at a resort, but most of the time we were venturing out to where the locals businesses and stores were and chatted with people as much as we could. at one point, we talked with a lovely lady at a local maui children's bookstore. she was one of the many volunteers taking turns looking after the store to help keep it open in the midst of an economic downturn. she was really into sustainability and protecting local way of life. we also met a pineapple fruitstand vendor. his story? he came to maui on a business trip in 1980, fell in love, sent in his resignation letter via snail mail and never looked back.

for the longest time, we looked at places and jobs in maui, hoping that maybe we could start a life there. i think we really would've moved if there wasn't such a strict policy in bringing in pets from the mainland.

so for now our maui dream has been neatly tucked away. instead we like to watch hawaii life on hgtv to make ourselves feel better. :) starting life here in virginia doesn't seem so bad {until we hear of snowstorms - like the one we're getting tonight/tomorrow}. but here's to dreaming of sunshine.

  1. Maui looks amazing! A more laid back lifestyle closer to nature is so tempting, isn't it? We're contemplating on making a big move as well.

    1. Most definitely! And I love the sense of community & how they all came together for their local children's bookstore so it wouldn't close.

    1. Europe would be grand to live for a bit :) Hope you get to experience Hawaii. I was a "tourist" and not sure how local we were able to get, but hope you can try that as well!

  6. You've certainly done your research! I love the silhouette photo and the ones of the sunset reflecting on the water. I don't mind the snow coming b/c I don't feel like I've had enough ;). I like the life I have here in the States but I'd rather be in Philly than MD (family, friends, familiarity). But if I could just visit somewhere, it'd be Taiwan or Japan.

  7. REALLY?! That's where we had our wedding and honeymoon in 2008. I don't know if I'd want to live there forever though?! And maybe that's only because I'm from an area which is mostly sunny and warm all year round. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful and I loved it and would love to visit once a year if I could! -Jess L

    1. hey! that's pretty awesome :) yeah we definitely wondered if we were falling into the island fantasy but me and yangkyu are the type that love relaxing and quiet life and thought that life on maui would suit us. we were planning on making another trip out just to make sure but since in the end it would've been hard to go because of piri we decided to postpone the whole idea :)

  10. I would live in San Francisco... or New York. I fall in love with those cities every time I visit or read a blog post or story. The husband and I fantasize about it every so often- moving to one of those cities. Often times in my life, that visualization led to the creation of it in reality. I really hope that's how this plays out, too. :) But San Antonio has such a great cost of living and is so close to Austin, it is still a conundrum for us. Great post!

  11. Gorgeous honeymoon shots!!! My parents wanted to move to Hawaii when I was little but the cost of living was too high at the time (which says a lot because my parents lived comfortably). I didn't realize they were so strict about bringing pets in. Have you guys thought about The Virgin Islands? Although I'm not sure on their laws regarding pets but it's beautiful, sunny and tropical there.
