when i turned 30 it literally felt like nothing. while my friends were ringing in their 30th birthdays at bars and bawling when the clock hit 12, i went on like nothing really changed because, really, nothing did change.
having been in my thirties for a while now i have loved every moment. seriously, i think this is like the best decade. and while i loved my twenties {oh those days of just running on adrenaline and passion} i wouldn't want to repeat it if given the chance. the stability, confidence and happiness i feel now does not compare to what i had then.
but. but. but. if there is one thing i could qualm about when i turned thirty was how my body changed, including my skin.
ugh. i've been cursed with adult acne. it's been something i've been able to just brush away, but lately it's been nagging me. i mean after consecutive months of waiting for one pimple to go away only to be greeted by a new one is a little frustrating and annoying. this is something that i didn't have to go through in my teens and twenties and i am paying in full now. with interest.
i never had a skin routine {really, at one point i was just washing my face with a bar of soap}. i was always told that i should have one even if i didn't have any skin issues but i never listened. on a rare occasion, i've used exfoliators and oils from suki {they're great by the way} and when a sudden onset of extreme redness and dryness came on, moisturizers and toner from iope, a korean brand {also very great}, would always do the trick in bringing my skin back to normal.
i thought about maybe going back using those products, and while suki is organic, iope isn't. and because i try to be a little bit more conscious about the products i use, i thought to try out a little homemade scrub using some regular products that we have in our homes. i did a little digging on the internet and came across this post and decided to give the lemon and sugar facial scrub a try.
what you'll need:
+ half of a fresh lemon
+ half cup of granulated sugar
+ one tablespoon of olive oil
+ one tablespoon of organic honey {i picked up raw organic honey from trader joe's}
you can read all the amazing benefits of the ingredients mentioned above and also instructions on how to mix them here. it's simple enough to make a weekly or bi-weekly batch.
i've been reading a lot about thoughts on exfoliating daily and the dangers of doing so. for now i plan on exfoliating about 2-3 times a week.
i'm learning to come to terms with the fact that the things that i used to get away with in the past, i no longer can. and skincare is one of them.
do you have a skincare routine that has worked for you? please share. i would really love to know.

Gotta thank to hormones and age, right? I dont have an issue with acne but rather super dry skin (screams high chance if wrinkles). Your scrub sounds so yummy but wont lemon juice be too harsh since it has natural AHA?
ReplyDeleteI dont exfoliate as much as I should but I absolutely love Ole Henriksen Walnut scrub. Any scrub (even baking soda base) irritates my skin but this one is awesome. Then I follow by yogurt+honey+olive oil mask.
it does say that lemon juice can be harsh but for some odd reason my skin has been reacting very nicely to it! perhaps because now i have more oily skin? ugh. your scrub and mask sound amazing!
DeleteUp until almost a year ago, I just used a St. Ives scrub, but now I use all Lush products. It's nice knowing exactly what's in each product, you know? Keep it all natural :) I definitely recommend you check it out. It can be a bit expense but lasts a long time. It's worth it in my book!
ReplyDeletei do remember reading up on your skin care routine with lush! and i've passed by their stores so often but never went inside. thanks for the tip!
DeleteJane, I suffer from breakout too:( Now that I'm closes to 40 than 30 (eeeeek), you would think it would have gone by now, but nope....sigh....thanks for sharing this DIY. I don't exfoliate as much as I need too, and I should really start doing so.
ReplyDeletei've actually exfoliating every day (not sure if it's going to backfire in my face...) and it could be me just imagining, but i feel like the darker spots caused by acne scars is getting a little lighter. but i think i'll have to give it a couple more weeks/months to see real results!
DeleteThis looks really good, I will have to give this a try, I have break outs now and again, which are annoying. Super DIY!! Thank you so much for the comments doll, I appreciate it. You have a sweet blog...I hope you are well :)

DeletePerfect and easy DIY that helps you. Lemon and olive oil is wonderful and has so many versatile uses.:)
ReplyDeleteit certainly does!
DeleteOh this sounds awesome friend! And I would agree with you about being your 30's I love it as well! But like you have had some skin issues....what better way to remedy it than with natural ingredients! Thank you so much for sharing this one! Nicole xo
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome!
Deleteyour thirties are definitely rough on your skin... you have be extra special with it!
ReplyDeletemost definitely!
DeleteDoes this make your skin dry? I'll have to try it when my skin is not still suffering from winter dryness lol
ReplyDeleteit does dry it out a bit but for my skin it hasn't been all that bad. i've gone two nights without applying moisturizer and it's been ok. and i always have to use moisturizer. i think the olive oil helps with keeping the dryness!
DeleteOh boy...this post rings so true for me. I have been nagged by my adult acne. It's so nagging that I can't even talk about it sometimes. I cherish the days when I have relatively clear skin but, it only last for so long before a new member joins the club. I used to obsess over products but I am discovering that simple works best for me. My skin just prefers that I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI also agree about being more confident as I grow older. I look forward to becoming wiser. Though I wish the knowledge came in my early 20s, it's OK to know that time is needed in order to "get there." =)

Deletei love a great diy skin care. thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome!
Deletewhat you say about being in your thirties makes me so excited for what's to come!
ReplyDeletei love this - i've been wanting to do some DIY skincare experiments, this would be the perfect one to start as I have all the ingredients at hand! x
i loved that too - that most of the ingredients were stuff i already had in my kitchen.
DeleteI'm glad you are enjoying your life in your 30's Jane c:
ReplyDeleteBummer to hear about your skin issue :c thanks for
this DIY skincare ^_^ my skin takes organic/homemade
very well c: Xx
it is a bummer! but hopefully i'll figure out some ways to take care of it :)
DeleteI like my current skin routine, but I don't think it does anything about these breakouts I've been experiencing for the past two years. The only thing that has helped me is eating better, drinking parsley water, and taking some collagen supplements ._.! It seems that no matter what I wash/scrub/tone/moisturize my face with, it doesn't make much of a difference.
ReplyDeletei think eating definitely has something to do with it. the thing that stumped me though was that drinking water is good for the skin and i drink tons of water a day and i still go through breakout issues. sigh.
DeleteI've been needing a good exfoliator and I love how this one is all-natural. Speaking of Korean beauty products, their facial masks are a god-send. I use 2-3 a week and they make my skin feel so bouncy and radiant. The next day, I can usually go without foundation, they're that good.

Another Beautiful Thing
i like that it's natural as well! and wow to those masks! sounds pretty amazing!
DeleteI don't exfoliate as much as I should, definitely will give this one a try. I've been using this black soap that I found at the grocery store. It's been very gentle on my face and helped with my blemishes. I'm in my 40s, and the sunspots are catching me by surprise, so I've been trying different products trying to combat that.
ReplyDeleteblack soap! you have my interest peaked. i'll have to check it out!
DeleteThat sounds quite yummy! I'm sure it would feel lovely on your skin :-)
ReplyDeletethe combination is really great and the olive oil makes the skin feel smooth which is always great!
Deletei need a good exfoliator and i like the ingredients for this one Jane. i couldn't do it everyday either. i have sensitive dry skin and it would be too much. however, we must or makeup etc. won't lay well on the skin. thanks for posting this. definitely going to give it a try.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.averysweetblog.com/
i have actually done it for the past three days and my skin has been ok. but my skin is more on the oily side (it used to be sensitive.. can skin change like that??). finding good products that work for you is so hard. i'm hoping that this at least is part of my solution!
DeleteUgh I am WITH you. My skin has pitched a fit and started getting way hormonal now. Have you tried Mario Badescu? It definitely helps with my skin when it's acting up
ReplyDeletei haven't tried it but i'm definitely going to look it up. thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteI really don't mind approaching to the thirties side either, I think having confidence equates to having happiness easier as well :) On the not so fun side, I too suffer that horrid breakout syndrome, it's time perfectly once a month so I figure it's just hormonal, but I'll definitely give the scrub a whirl - I also have a lot of lemons I need to use up and the other ingredients happily waiting to be used :)
ReplyDeletei also had lemons accumulating so i was glad that i found this diy facial scrub. and yes! i believe confidence does equate to having happiness easier!
Deletegreat idea, mummy needs to take better care of her skin so I will get her to try this :-)
ReplyDeleteheehe - misaki you can help mummy in the process :)
DeleteThis sounds great and so refreshing for your skin!
ReplyDeleteit definitely is!
DeleteTHANK YOU. I am all about good natural skin remedies, I'll be trying this!
ReplyDeleteawesome! i have to look into the one you shared as well!
DeleteI also relish being in my thirties, and struggle with adult acne (or as I like to refer to it, acne). The thing that's been working best for me lately is oil cleansing. I make my own facial oil with olive oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil & a few drops of tea tree oil. Just massage on, steam the face with a face cloth and wipe off the excess.
ReplyDeletei heard tea tree oil is great for the skin. your routine sounds so nourishing!
DeleteI would definitely go back to my mid 20's, I had so much fun! As for my skincare I try to do a scrub once in a while and try not to forget my face cream..I'm definitely trying your scrub, thanks for sharing!!!
