January 1, 2014

hey there, 2014.

happy new year! hope you spent the stroke of 12 just the way you wanted to.

did you set any goals or resolutions? i usually don't like to make any list {short or long} because i have been pretty bad at keeping them. but i do have one resolution for this year. i want to find my love for reading again. it's been missing for the past two years. for some reason i have found it hard to concentrate and fall into hours of just reading and getting lost in the story. but i miss that feeling terribly. and i want it back. i am thinking of starting with finishing the casual vacancy. what do you think?

today we're going to cook some rice cake soup. it's something that koreans eat on lunar new year, but also on january 1 as well. as a child, my relatives would tell me that i would age one year with every bowl i ate. i was shocked to see so many adults eat two or three bowls! but i remember at one point in my childhood, i wanted to grow up so fast that i ended up eating that many bowls of rice soup as well. i wonder what my hurry was.

us over here at always with yoo wish you a happy, healthy and exciting new year filled with new experiences and adventures. hope you'll continue to follow along and keep us company through our year as well.

happy 2014,
jane, yangkyu and of course, piri!

  4. Hmmm... I just bought a bunch of frozen rice cake, soup sounds like a great idea. Rice cake soup is also part of Japanese New Year's celebrations, but we usually celebrate on January 1st and use mochi instead of tteok. Also, check out the Wimpy Book Challenge to help get a jump start on your reading resolution.

  9. Well hey there, too!! Happy new year! I'm actually the same way - I don't make any new year's resolutions for some reason, but this year I've decided on a few that I'll soon share :) Also, so happy that your resolution is to read more! I know how hard it is to find the time, but I encourage it :) And one more thing - I'd love to try this rice soup! In the Japanese tradition, we eat a mochi soup on New Years day which is so delicious! Happy new year, Jane!

  13. I remember wanting to be older sooner when I was younger, too. It's so funny how fast we want to grow up but then how much we want time to slow down as we do get older. Irony is interesting.

    Happy 2014!

  17. Happy new year! I saw a Korean friend of mine post that new year rice cake soup on Facebook today. I'm sure it's delicious. I love Korean food!

I lost my love of reading, too, as I majored in English and was forced to read way too many books. I'd suggest the Hunger Games series if you haven't read it yet. It's a pretty quick read and then you can indulge in the movies after :)

  18. Happy New Year! Aw the soup looks so nice (and the opening of the video was the funniest! :P), we love soups and are slowly learning more about Korean food (which is still quite a mistery here in Barcelona). It can be sometimes so hard to find time to read, I usually take advantage of the train and metro commutes, but for that I am so slow reading my books that the work mates laugh at me because they see me always entering the office with the same book :)
