// at seoul soondae on tuesday night watching korea vs. russia. half time. in between stuffing lots of kim bap and fried dumplings in my mouth. gosh i love the food world cup. //
is anyone else watching the world cup?
i'm really not a soccer fan and i don't follow any of the leagues or players, but ever since the craze that was the world cup back in 2002 for a lot of koreans and korean americans, i've been getting excited every four years, as much as i do for the olympics.
the washington post gave some places in the dmv area to watch the world cup matches and listed baden baden and cafe tu ah in annandale, va, as recommendations for folks following team korea. yangkyu and i went and baden baden was jam packed. after driving around for a little bit we found a restaurant, seoul soondae, which had a diverse mix of people in terms of age {few folks our parents age, our age and young folks sprinkled in}. i liked the atmosphere very much.
i kept saying throughout the match that i kinda hoped that the game would end up in a tie. you know. i was thinking about piri and russian dog. i know. so silly. but you know what? the game did end up in a tie. i don't think i ever had a wish come true that fast in my life.
this sunday we'll probably head back to seoul soondae as korea takes on algeria. forget baden baden and cafe tu ah. seoul soondae was a pretty happening place!
what will you be doing during the weekend?
hope you have a wonderful one.

I have been trying to get into soccer recently, especially since my fiancee is German and they LOVE their soccer like I love Oreos. And that's A LOT.
ReplyDeleteoh i bet they do love their soccer! did you get to watch the usa vs. portugal over the weekend? it was an amazing game!
DeleteI've been trying to follow it. I haven't kept up with all the games. Will watch more this weekend. I love the players of Japan and their hair color. The players of Cameroon were horrible (nasty hits on the opposing team) and they ended up fighting each other. It's been interesting!
ReplyDeleteoh that is so terrible! but yes some of these matches have been really great to watch!
DeleteI saw the match between Spain and the Netherlands and Spain got their ass beat! That is a big deal in futbol world! And I definitely watched the U.S win their first game; I was so excited! I hope you have a great weekend Jane! -Jess L
ReplyDeleteP.S. Gosh you two are so cute together! It's like you were made just for each other. =)
i miss that one but caught the switzerland vs. france as well as all the other matches on sunday. the us match vs. portugal was so so amazing we were pretty excited over that one too even though it was a draw.
DeleteYou have magical soccer powers - haha! My husband is a World Cup nut, so I get dragged into watching it with him. Hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeletehaha! i think i do. i did it again on sunday when i felt bad for cristiano ronaldo and wished that the game would end in a tie.. and it did with like 20 seconds left!
DeleteI've only paid attention to soccer as much as I have since my husband and I have been together (which, as you may recall, has been several years). He used to play club soccer and was very good at it and he still has a deep love for the sport. =)

DeleteI've never been into soccer, and I do kinda regret it everytime WC comes around. Sigh....too bad Canadians are only good in hockey and winter sports:P

Deletethank you~
ReplyDeleteHere in Spain everything soccer related is such a craziness and specially in Barcelona, some people even get off from work earlier without having to excuse themselves :S lol but I guess being eliminated on the first round will make things go back to normal now ;) btw, I spot an awesome t-shirt on Yangkyu!
ReplyDeleteWhile soccer isn't that big in Canada either, I live a the Italian/Portuguese neighbourhood and I definitely know when either of those teams are playing.
