in many korean and korean american households you eat a bowl of miyeokguk {seaweed soup} on your birthday.
this is something that women who just gave birth eat as well because it's healthy and seaweed has crucial vitamins and is rich with calcium. the tradition of eating a bowl of seaweed is then passed on to the child and every birthday the child will have.
i didn't have the ingredients needed to make this for yangkyu on his birthday on friday but i made him a bowl last night. i only knew how to make this a couple of years ago. before then cooking and the kitchen intimidated me. i didn't even know how to follow the simplest of recipes. now when i am able to make something and it tastes remotely in the same ballpark as the ones my mama used to make i think to myself, "i'm all grown up."
recipe here.

ReplyDeletei love foods that have these wonderful stories!
DeleteAww, that's really sweet. In the Chinese culture, you eat a bowl of noodles on your birthday (symbolic for having a long life)
ReplyDeletei read somewhere that seaweed also has a similar symbolism - it's long which is symbolic having a long life!
DeleteOh yum! I remember when I visited Korea years ago I had seaweed soup as a side dish with every meal. Love it!

Deletesome days I wonder if I'll ever cook like my mom! ;) my family's equivalent of this seaweed soup is a piping hot bowl of vermicelli.Once, I made it for myself when I was sick in NYC, and I cried after eating the first mouthful because it tasted just like my mom's, and it made me miss her so much.
ReplyDeleteawww i get those moments a lot! i miss my mom through the foods i cook!
DeleteYum! When we eat miso soup at restaurants my girls are always so excited when there are pieces of seaweed in it. We also love to eat roasted seaweed with sea salt as a snack. :)
ReplyDeleteyes! i love roasted seaweed too! so good!
Deleteoh lovely, I've started having a bowl of miso with my meals lately (just the instant store bought stuff) but the floating bits of seaweed are my favourite, may have a go at this recipe myself, looks delicious and I love the story behind too :)
