On Saturday, while we were staying in Virginia Beach, we left Piri in good hands with the folks over at Petsmart Doggy Day Care and drove about an hour away to spend the afternoon at Colonial Williamsburg. I have been to this place before on a high school field trip and thought it would be good to go back with Yangkyu who has never been here before.
We got to see how some things were made back in the 1700, witnessed some re-enactments, bought a few things and ate tavern style over apple ciders. I was surprised to see so many dog owners who brought their pets along. I didn't know that dogs were allowed within the grounds. I kind of regretted not bringing Piri with us but the day ended up being so hot that it was probably better off for him to stay indoors, since he is an older dog. But perhaps if we're ever back in the area during the cooler months, I would love for us to bring Piri along. The College of William & Mary is also not too far off from Colonial Williamsburg and the restaurants, cafes and bookstores all around the area is super dog friendly.
You probably need more than an afternoon to really take in everything that Colonial Williamsburg has to offer. They even have evening activities, all of which which we didn't check out. We ended up heading back to early so we can have some more beach time. But you were most definitely fun, Colonial Williamsburg! Thanks for a good time.

Also, you've made me think about this word Colonial. It seems frequently used in the USA yet in Kenya (where I was born), it has become a word that we don't really like so much. I learn something new every time you blog x
thanks! and you noticed basil :) i notice potted basil plants a lot more now. :) and yangkyu asked the same thing re: the word colonial. I know it does have a bad connotation but with this place I always associated it as describing a certain time period when they dressed a certain way, etc. so odd how certain words used in certain settings trigger different feelings. but definitely an eye opening word in more ways than one!

DeleteWhat a fascinating place to visit! I remember going to a similar place for a school field trip once and we got to try churning butter and making candlesticks. Colonial DIYs :-)

DeleteI was in Virginia Beach over the weekend as well! Williamsburg is beautiful, I visit every year in either the Spring or Fall, this year we chose fall. Busch Gardens is really fun during Hall-o-scream. William and Mary was my dream college growing up, and then I realized how expensive it was. I still rock the t-shirt I got there when I was 8.

DeleteWhat a fun day! Fresh basil is the best... we have basil and tomatoes growing in our backyard, so we've been eating a lot of caprese salad this summer. Yum!

ReplyDeleteI would love to visit this place, that's one thing about living in California that I dislike...there isn't this kind of history. I truly love your pictures...the colors are gorgeous and it makes me want to be there!

I've never been to one colonial event or place like this although we were tempted to visit St Fagans in Wales which look a little bit like Williamsburg but ended up without enough time. Next time with Piri? I would love to see more of it, did you buy anything? The hats look very nice!
