making kimchi with perilla leaves

have you ever had perilla leaves?

it's mostly found in asian dishes {you can see how different countries use it in their cooking here}. i always liked eating them with korean bbq. you would wrap the meat with a perilla leaf, add a little rice and a paste of your choice {my favorite is this}.

but, perilla leaves can also be made into a kimchi side dish. you can buy them premade at the grocery store, but after tasting them fresh while they were still green {the leaves change color as the days go on}, i couldn't go back. 

i used maangchi's recipe again. you can find ingredients and her easy to follow instructions {and video!} there.

  3. My husband runs a family farm and they grow Korean veggies including these leaves ... Thanks for the recipe! I'm Chinese and he's Korean so I'm always looking for English recipes for Korean food.

    1. i agree! we made regular kimchi a couple of years ago and it tasted so horrible! :) this one was much easier! we also made kkadugi too. :)

    1. i don't know a whole lot, but i know you can also soak them in soy sauce only. they are not my absolute favorite but i know some folks really like it!

  13. I am going to have to try this! I go to a monthly food swap and one of the girls traded me homemade cucumber kimchi and my husband is like you need to learn how to how to make kimchi.

  14. Wow - this looks delicious! I love kimchee and growing up in Hawaii and with a Japanese background, I eat Asian food all the time - BUT how have I never had perilla leaves? I must try!!

  15. I usually don't eat kimchi because I'm super sensitive so spicy foods (like crazy ridiculous cartoon sensitive, haha) but this looks SO good! Ah, I wish I could taste! :)
